Transportation of Dangerous Substances and Chemicals

Transporting hazardous substances and chemicals used in different sectors requires high-level security. Large-scale accidents and the risk of environmental pollution impose serious responsibilities on logistics. Ensuring the safety of vehicles and drivers is of vital importance. Legal regulations are understandably quite demanding. Fortunately, technological developments provide solutions for the industry in this regard.

What is a Dangerous Substance?

Dangerous substances are materials that, due to their structure or properties, have a high probability of causing harm to humans, animals, buildings, and the environment during transportation. They are used in the pharmaceutical industry, mining industry, and chemical and petrochemical industry. They are grouped in three ways:

  • According to their chemical structure: Flammable, pressurized

  • According to their hazards: Explosive, toxic

  • According to their forms: Solid, liquid, gas

Symbols that represent these substances are as follows:

  • C code: Indicates corrosive properties. Examples include sulfur, salt solution, nitric acid, etc.

  • E code: Indicates explosive properties. Examples include nitroglycerin, picric acid, etc.

  • F code: Indicates a light flammable substance. Examples include gasoline, acetone, ethanol, etc.

  • T code: Indicates toxic substances.

All of these symbols are used to describe and transport radioactive materials by complying with legal, technical, and sanitary conditions.

How is the Transportation of Dangerous Substances Carried Out?

The transportation of raw materials that contain chemical substances and have flammable properties is called "transportation of dangerous substances." This area has a large share in the logistics sector. Different methods are used in transportation. At the same time, transportation can be carried out by following two different routes. Transportation that begins by road can continue by rail. Alternatively, transportation that begins by sea can continue by air.

Companies that want to transport hazardous materials and products are required to have an ADR certificate. Employees are required to take certain trainings. This requirement aims to provide high-level security in road and international transportation. The transportation of companies that do not have an authorization certificate is blocked.

  • The "Dangerous Goods Regulations" is referred to in the shipment of high-risk materials.

  • Transportation is carried out with UN-approved packaging to prevent leaks and spills.

  • Flammable gases are stacked at the farthest point from the employees.

  • Flammable gases are kept away from heat and heat sources.

  • Occupational safety measures are taken. Drivers carry equipment such as filtered gas masks, protective overalls, protective gloves, work clothes, boots, etc. in their vehicles.

Alper Logistics provides its customers with quality service in safely transporting hazardous materials domestically and internationally.
